Picking up a platform for blog is the start point for every blogger. Most of people go with one of the two major blog platforms – Blogger or WordPress. For the many points of view, I started blogging with Blogger and I always suggest blog starters to choose Blogger. If you are looking for your first blog platform, read ” Why I Recommend Blogger for Your First Blog” to get a better understanding of Blogger.
However, if you need more flexibility, self hosted WordPress might be the better option. Personally I had used a Blogger blog since 2013 and I like the usability, but to improve SEO and reduce the load time, I decided to have my own domain website and changed a platform to self hosted WordPress.
Self Hosted WordPress
WordPress is an open CMS source service that allows advanced personalizations by using plugins and theme if needed. It has two versions of blog, free WordPress blog and self hosted WordPress blog. Free WordPress blog gives users 3 GB of space and automatic backups, while you are not allowed to use other analytics tool, custom themes and plugins to your blog.
On the other hand, Self hosted WordPress blog gives you full control over the appearance of your blog and it is available to use custom theme and plugins (including analytics and tracking services). Therefore, self hosted WordPress owes more customization features and it is possible to create any type of website you want and publish contents easily with advanced content management.
Here are 3 features I like about self hosted WordPress.
The Advantages of Self Hosted WordPress
1. Customization with Themes and Plugins
Although you have default WordPress themes, there are thousands of custom themes for your appearance and plugins that add specific features for the functionality and user usability. Especially most of plugins are free and powerful so that it is possible to customize a website of your taste at low price and give a better user experience.
2. Good for Search Engine Optimization
WordPress is a SEO friendly blog platform and it increases the ranking of your web page and reduce the load time. Matt Cutts, who is in charge of Google’s web search in Search Quality group, officially approved that WordPress works for SEO and solves the related problems. Besides, adding WordPress SEO plugins support to improve your performance and effects even more.
3. Media Management
This is very different from Blogger. With this media management on WordPress, you can easily upload images by just dragging and dropping them into the media uploader, manage all your images at one place and optimize for SEO by adding the image title, caption, alt texts and description. In addition, you can edit images in the server like image crop. With plugins, you can make the media management even more easier to use.
These are the reasons why I moved my blog from Blogger to self hosted WordPress. In fact, the results in Google PageSpeed Insights improved such as the scores of loading speed and user experience. What do you think my new blog with WordPress?
